A long exposure brings the interplay between Atlantic waves and the harsh volcanic coastline of Lanzarote to a much steadier pace. This image was shot for the Photographing Lanzarote eBook (see www.photographinglanzarote.com), a digital guide for photographers visiting the island.

The El Golfo coastline where this image was taken is my go-to place for landscape photography on Lanzarote. It never fails to deliver compelling shots whatever the weather and tide conditions - in fact, the worse the weather the better and more dramatic my results seem to be.

In this scene the island is bathed in 'calima', a weather phenomenon in which the prevailing wind brings sand from the nearby Sahara and creates a surreal haze. Couple this with the lunar-like landscapes of Lanzarote and it makes you feel as though you're photographing another planet!
