This photo was taken at Maumere Beach while on a motorcycle tour across IndonesiaTime
I took this photo at around 5:00pm, while sitting out at the beach side bar enjoying a cold drink and watching the sun set. I noticed some young kids running along the beach into the ocean. Quickly realising that this was a good opportunity for a photo, I grabbed my camera and walked down to join them. Walking out into the ocean up to my waist, I got closer to them waiting until the young boy came up for a breath of air.Lighting
The light was low as it was sunset and back lit. I was able to use a higher iso than usual and to bring back the shadows using Lightroom. I would have preferred to have used a flash but the spontaneity of the moment did not allow for that as it was difficult while standing in water up to my waist.Equipment
I took this photo using my Canon 5D MarkIII and my Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 USM L II LensInspiration
I wanted to show the happiness of the young children throughout Indonesia even though they don't have the things that many children around the world have these days. They live very simply and are actually some of the happiest children I have ever met.Editing
The photo was back lit so i had to expose for the bright sky and get it as bright as possible without over exposing it, so when it came to processing the photo i had to bring down the highlights in the sky and bring back the shadows in the boys face.In my camera bag
My travel bag usually contains my Canon 5D MarkIII body with the Canon 14mm f/2.8 L II Lens Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 L II Lens and also the Canon 300mm f/4 Lens and my Manfrotto MT190CXPRO3 Carbon fibre tripod. I also use Lee filters and have a remote timer.Feedback
When capturing the sheer enjoyment of children, it is best to get fully immersed in the moment, while being aware of the right lighting conditions that produce the atmospheric mood that you want. For this particular photo, more than anything it was a matter of pure instinct, and being available to get the photo at the right time.
