Simon de Montfort's crusaders placed three catapults at the gates of Minerve and one directed at the main well. By depriving it of reserves of water and taking advantage of summer heat they succeeded in bringing the city to its knees. After weeks of drought, visicount Guilhem de Minerve emerged to negotiate the town's surrender. He succeeded in saving his own life and that of the inhabitants of Minerve, but all the Good Men, over 150, refused to deny their faith and were burned to death on 22 July 1210.
