I was visiting a friend at his property in rural NSW, this was at the bottom of his drivewayTime
We'd just driven 4 hours from a festival in rural Victoria to try and make it before dark. It was a quick stopover before driving back down to Melbourne that night and we got there right as the sun was setting. Daylight savings time had just set the clock back by an hour, so sunset was an hour earlier than we were used to.Lighting
This was one of those shots where everything came together. I wasn't expecting to be shooting that day, as we were essentially just making the 8 hour drive home with a quick stop at a friend's house, so my camera bag was buried in between all our camping supplies. As soon as we came down the driveway and I looked back to see the sunlight filtering through the trees and reflecting off all the dust our car had kicked up, I went digging, as the soft sunset lighting disappears so quickly. We just timed our arrival perfectly for the strong colours of the sunset. Not even 2 minutes later, it was gone!Equipment
I just used my Nikon 7100 and 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Nikkor lens.Inspiration
This was a spur of the moment photo opportunity. Looking back at the sunset with the orange glow of the sun reflecting off the dust was all the inspiration I needed!Editing
I did very minimal post processing aside from cropping the image and adjusting the highlights and shadows. I did go through and individually edit areas of trees for lighting, but that's about it. I'm still quite new to photography; I only began to learn about post processing last year, so there is a LOT that I'm still yet to learn, and I know that this image can be better. I'm sure if I edited this image again this year, and again once a year for the next few years, every version would be different as I applied new post-processing skills. In my camera bag
Being new to photography, I have a very limited selection when it comes to equipment; that being one lens and one camera body. It definitely makes my shooting choices easy! What I did do when choosing a lens, was to invest in an 18-300mm so that I could have the option of shooting both wide angle and telephoto whilst being compact for travel.Feedback
Always have your camera ready nearby, because it's been the days I didn't expect to shoot that I've managed to get some of my best images. This is a perfect example of the light, conditions and location all just coming together at the right time - I was just lucky enough to be there.
