Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at my home in Groningen. It was the beginning of Summer and I had just bought a large bouquet of tulips. The sunlight was streaming through the windows onto the flowers.

Time

I had just bought these tulips and after putting them into the water I realized that they were positioned at a very attractive angle. It was around 5 pm and I remember shooting these tulips at different angles, balancing while standing on a chair and zooming in to capture them, without a blur, from above.

Lighting

Macro photography is one of my favorite kinds of photography and I love the contrast between darkness and light. I tried to capture the natural light that was streaming through the window next to the vase with the tulips. With slow shutter speed and medium aperture I managed to create a softness but still keep the brightness of the flowers.

Equipment

I used my NikonD5300 and a Nikon 18-300 lens. No extra attributes.

Inspiration

I wanted to take some macro shots and these tulips called to me. The combination of their colors; white with a hint of green and the fact that they were not completely in bloom fascinated me. Furthermore, they were positioned in a way that reminded me of love and affection. They were leaning into each other, gravitating towards each other. This photo is actually one of three.

Editing

In order to enhance the whiteness, and thus the contrast, of the flowers, I might have enhanced the shadows of the background a little bit.

In my camera bag

Since I not a complete professional(just yet) and still saving for more lenses, one of them a macro one, my bag usually contains just my Nikon D5300 with 18-300 lens and two batteries and plenty memory cards.

Feedback

For me, it was the unusual composition; look for something that speaks to you and try different positions to capture both the right angle and the 'just right' lighting.
