This photo was taken on my cattle ranch. I'm a self taught photographer and this cat loves to follow me around the property and give me plenty of practice.Time
This photo was taken around the middle of the day when the sun was high in the sky.Lighting
It was a beautiful sunny day, but the fence post cast some shade over most of the cat creating some pretty decent lighting.Equipment
This picture was shot with a Canon EOS 5D Mark III. I used a Canon EF 70-200 mm f/2.8L IS II lens. This was shot handheld and no other equipment was used.Inspiration
I love taking pictures of our farm animals and one day, while taking pictures of some cattle, I noticed our cat appearing to peek at me from behind a fence post. I loved the look and knew I would want to do something later to make his eye really stand out. That inspired me to turn the rest of the photo black and white.Editing
I did a little post processing in Lightroom to start with, and then I turned the photograph black and white (except for the eye) in Photoshop CC. My goal was to make the amazing color of the cat's eye really stand out!In my camera bag
These days I always have my Canon 5D Mark III and my Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS II lens! They do great things together and can cover just about any type of photography. I also like to have extra batteries and a cleaning kit.Feedback
If you want to capture a similar photograph, practice and patience are key. I was practicing on my pet cat when I took the photo of him peeking at me from behind a fence post. Don't always wait for the subject to move or get into a position you hope it will end up in, move yourself and try different angles and keep snapping pictures. Check your playback early on to make adjustments to your settings as necessary, and periodically check it throughout to make sure your photos aren't turning out over or under exposed. Sometimes clouds roll in while your snapping pictures, and sometimes the sun shows up. Regardless, the sky can change on you, and it can be easy to overlook sometimes if we're focused on the subject, so checking the playback here and there is important. These tips should help you capture a great photograph!
