There is a story behind this scene... I had my go pro cam on me and I was taking pics with it until this kid snatched it off my hands and had to give him my fruit juice carton in exchange... hahaha it was crazy, but at the end I got my go pro back and was able to take this great pic.

Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in Kerala, Athirapally. There is the most beautiful waterfall there.. and in the woods as you approach it there are numerous families of monkeys.

Time

Early afternoon

Lighting

Lighting was natural. It was a pretty nice day. And the light shining through the trees was very good.

Equipment

Canon 5DMKIII + L 100mm 2.8 macro Canon lens, no tripod, no flash, no filters.

Inspiration

Well there was no real inspiration really, but there is quite a unique story to it. We were walking towards the exit and I was taking some pictures then I felt this noise and weight on my backpack, as I turned my head round I realised that a monkey had snatched my GoPro from the side of my backpack and was running off with it. So my first instinct was to run after it, then I thought I could try and bargain it back exchanging a more competitive object I had with me, a carton on orange juice we were drinking. So I went over slowly towards the monkey, showed the carton, put it on a bench and moved away. It came down the tree left the GoPro on the floor and went straight to for the orange juice. It was a vicious little thing, not friendly at all, but quite funny in the end. I grabbed my GoPro then started taking pics of him. He wasn't as friendly as I would have expected but the pics turned out pretty good, so it was all worthwhile.

Editing

I alway post-process pics in Lightroom, heavier post in Photoshop, but in natural photography it's extremely rare, I actually can't recall ever doing any. Post is quite tricky because it can ruin your picture if you let it take over. So the first thing I usually concentrate on is the "before". As long as I can get the flattest pic I will be very happy. The flatter it is the best I will gain from any post. Important thing when using a 100mm is get as close as possible and try not to exaggerate with ISO to have a smooth in all perfectly sharp image, so when you crop it you don't lose detail.

In my camera bag

The must is my 24-70mm Canon lens. I only own one body so that is what I have with me all the time. I often carry a 14mm and the macro 100mm. I have not owned a zoom lens yet, but I am thinking of purchase one soon. Never out of batteries. A tripod, even if its small is always great to have on. ND filters are always with me too. Thats mostly it regards the travel back pack. I do have a proper Lowepro Hard case in which I store all the big gear, being a video maker as well I need lots of space for all the bits and pieces.

Feedback

Well, whatever you take a picture of I think it has to tell a story. Whether it be a person, an animal, or anything else. It must be something you can relate to in terms of feelings. If that's missing, then the picture is practically useless. I have many of those (lol). The best pics have the story as well as a good technical skill. I'm not a pro, it's mostly a hobby. But I'm starting to get into it more and more. It's a moment of life that will never repeat itself that you are going to freeze. That's why it has to be a story teller. It helps to have a clear vision of what you would like as a result as well. taking thousands of pics to choose from doesn't really help. It does in the cases you have a clear idea of what you want to obtain. I can't really give advice I think. I don't feel I'm in that position, what I can do is try and share my opinions and my fails. One other fail is delaying to learn about light. Light is everything even when there is isn't. So knowing about light is the first thing. I'm only experimenting on manual settings in this last year. What I do is I take a pic with the P mode then see what settings it automatically used, then try in M mode and start tweaking to find the exact type of picture I have in mind. Now I'm starting to use it always in M mode and seem to be getting the best results. Take many pictures to test the settings and the effects they have on image quality. What I have noticed in wildlife photography is the more time you spend with your subject, the more it becomes comfortable with your face, movements and equipment and this really helps. I think it actually could be half of the job. It will become more free to be itself with you around and will act normally and not frightened. Thats when you have the best chances of shooting a good pic. As I said, it's the expressions I like, not the animal its self I try and photograph. It could be a frog, but it has to be doing something interesting or have a unique look, or be funny, or make me feel "awwww look at that.." or feel fear, it cannot just be the animal itself. Then Focus on the eyes. That is a MUST. Specially if its a portrait. Thats where people are going to look. That said, I just hope to get better and better all the time. View bug is a great place where to learn. I look at hundred of pics a day on here. I find so many ideas and the creativity of some photographers is really incredible. It makes me feel like I really want to become a good photographer, so this site is a great one for the job.
