As it was a grey day today & after seeing some great macro shots on here, I thought I would have a go myself, unfortunately I don't own a Nikon mount macro lens but still have my old Sigma 105mm f-2.8 Pentax K mount macro lens.
To use the lens you need to do everything manually, I used a Pentax – Nikon lens mount adapter then set the aperture ring on the lens to the desired f-stop then programed the settings for a non cpu lens into the camera (i.e. focal length 105, aperture f-11)
I used two tripods one to hold the pencil! A remote release plus my flash mounted on a light stand with Yongnuo wireless flash triggers.
Manual focus and lots of patience to add the water drop to the end of the pencil.
Pure luck! that the flash helped to add a star burst..
Not perfect but happy with my 1st attempt, I now have lots of ideas for some more…

Gary,
Wow, what a great shot. I don't know how you could improve this "not perfect" image. The refection is spot on, the composition - intriguing, and the color is fabulous.

I agree 100% with all these coments! I was so sad when I read how you felt it was not perfect. If only some of mine were that "not perfect"! I sent a like and award, but I used the CREATIVE choice because I wanted to tel you how proud of you I am for not giving up and using your gift to present to us and words to teach us how we can delve into our creativity to master new compositions. My award is as rustygardener has said...genuis and as stoney

I mainly shoot Landscapes and Seascapes, my favorite type of work is Long Exposures so I always have a sturdy tripod, remote wireless release, 13,10,6 and 3 stop ND filters along with a range of graduated filters, my trusty Nikon D800, Nikon 16-35mm f/4, Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 plus recently added a Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8.Feedback
Just have a go as shooting something out of your comfort zone. It can be great fun.
