Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Crater Lake, Oregon.

Time

This was taken around 1AM in the morning

Lighting

This photo was taken on a moon less night. When capturing Astro pics on a moon less nights we will need exposure to be more than 30" and when the shutter is open beyond 30" we will get a good foreground but our stars will not be crisp. In situations like these i do a composite, one exposure for stars and one for the foreground and merge them in PS.

Equipment

This photo was captured with Nikon D700 with 14-24mm F2.8 lens and bento tripod with shutter release cable

Inspiration

Many of us live in City and due to the light pollution our night sky viewing is limited and we don't get to enjoy the beauty in our night sky. I am trying to show the beauty that exists in our night sky through my pics and also bring awareness on what we are missing due to light pollution.

Editing

I use photoshop for all my post processing, I also use Lightroom but use that for organizing my raw files only.

In my camera bag

My gear consists of Nikon D810 Nikon D700 14-24mm F2.8 24-70mm F2.8 70-200mm F2.8 Benro Tripod Shutter release cable.

Feedback

If you want to capture milky way images you need get away from light polluted areas, dark sky finder is one app which can help you in locating areas which are not light polluted. Once you have a location then you should know where to look for milky way, star walk is another app which can help you in finding the milky way. Milkyway normally rises in South east and sets in South west. You will need a lens with F2.8 Aperture, a shutter release cable and a tripod. Typical setting for capturing a milkyway is 25-30" exposure, f2.8, iso 3200 and WB 4000-5000. focusing at night is difficult so pre focus your shot or know your infinity on the lens and set the focus to manual and dial the focus to infinity manually. If you are starting off then do it on a moon less night once you develop your skills you can capture them with moon also. some sample images can be found on my website www.chintlaphotography.com
