This was part of an impromptu photoshoot at my studio in Tampa, Florida. I had rented a Nikon D800 with a Zeiss Otus 55mm f/1.4 APO-Distagon for a client shoot and had an extra day with it, so I decided to have some fun with it.Time
I know I did this on a weekend... and that day was a crazy blur of activity. I defer to the EXIF data... 7:48pm.Lighting
I was going for a gritty look, so I went with a single strobe for a key, used a gold bounce for a touch of fill, and a LightBlaster on a Canon 580EX Speedlite (the mushroom cloud was one of the slides that came with the LB kit). Pretty sure I used an old Nikkor 50mm F1.2 on the LightBlaster... the cyc wall had been painted a dark gray for a WWE promo a week or so before this shoot (took like 5 coats of paint to make it white again!) and the 1.2 was the fastest lens I had.Equipment
Started out with the Nikon D800 and the Zeiss Otus 55mm f/1.4 APO-Distagon (F-mount), but after an hour of testing the only battery I had was toast and I didn't want to have to stop and keep recharging, so I threw on an EF adapter ring and the shot most of the shoot with a Canon 5D3. While I wish I had a few more megapixels for larger prints, it was the right decision at the time.Inspiration
I wanted to do something fun that would also be fun for my makeup artist friend, Luandra Whitehurst. And who doesn't like shooting post-apocalyptic characters?!Editing
I painted in a little more fog from another shot of the same scene. Other than that, just tweaks in RAW.In my camera bag
I primarily shoot with my trusty Canon 5D3 w/ no fewer than 3 batteries (I have the grip, but never use it because I have yet to find a bag that can accommodate a gripped 5D w/ a lens attached for quick draws). As for lenses... I typically have a 70-200 F2.8L, 24-70 F2.8L, Canon 35mm F2 IS (a super sharp lens that weighs next to nothing), and two old Nikkors: 85mm F1.4 and 50mm F1.2 (small, fast, sharp enough, and have incredible utility). I have like 5 more lenses, but these tend to always live in my bag. When I'm on the go, I always have a circular polarizer for every lens, a few NDs (0.6, 0.6 grad, 0.9, and 1.2), a bottle of panchro or pre-moistened lens wipes, lens/filter Lens Pens (red for filters, black for lenses), and a Giottos Rocket Blaster (bulb air blower).Feedback
I think the most important thing on this particular shoot was to keep my talent pumped up and in the moment. I played appropriate music (whatever got the expression I was aiming for) very loudly... loud enough to drown out inner dialogue. ;)
