Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken on my birthday day out to Chester Zoo in the UK.

Time

This was taken mid afternoon, overcast day.

Lighting

All natural light. Although the day was a bit overcast, it was quite bright giving a nice diffuse light.

Equipment

Canon 800D with canon 75-300mm lens. Shot was handheld. Shutter speed was a little slower than ideal at 1/200 for the zoom of 300mm but I was able to use the enclosure wall to steady the shot.

Inspiration

This was a photography day out with my daughter to shot animals. The meerkats are always fascinating to watch. the little ones are so fast and unpredictable it's hard to get them in shot, but the lookouts get themselves up nice and high and make great subjects.

Editing

As usual I ran the shot through lightroom to set the white balance and levels. I added a little vignetting to keep the eyes on the subject but that was it.

In my camera bag

I normally carry my Canon 800D. My go to general purpose lens is a sigma 18-125mm f3.8-5.6 but I will also usually have my canon 75-300mm zoom for close ups and candids and a 10-18mm for landscapes.

Feedback

Patience. Animals move almost constantly but will pause from time to time and can't be rushed. Take some test shots to get the settings right and then stick with it. Keep going until you get several shots you're happy with.
