If you drive out of Steamboat Springs Colorado along Elk River Road you eventually come to the end of the road where a large forestry sign will tell you that no motorized vehicles other than snowmobiles are allowed beyond this point. You have found Mount Zirkel Wilderness area. A 159,135 acre mountain wilderness with 155 miles of trails. The area also has two major rivers in the wilderness, the Elk and the Encampment, both have been proposed for official designation as wild and scenic rivers by the Forest Service, and offer many miles of lovely valley hiking.
