Location
This shot was on of many taken in Country Victoria Australia a couple of years ago.Time
This shot was taken during a massive lightning storm between 10pm and 2am, with strikes happening every few minutes I just aimed at a bit of sky where the clouds were thickest and opened the shutter, closing it once a strike had taken place.Lighting
No additional lighting was required in fact I stood in pitch black and let the lightning light the clouds. A high ISO is a must, this was shot at ISO 1000Equipment
Nikon D5000 sigma 70 - 300 @ 300, heavy tripod and remote release.Inspiration
The storm was immense and I just had to capture it.Editing
The only post processing done on this shot was some sharpening ( un-sharp mask ) in Gimp and conversion from RAW to .jpgIn my camera bag
I usually carry 2 Nikon Bodies, a d5000 with Sigma 70-300 attached, and a D5100 with Tamron 90mm attached, I also carry a Fancier tripod, LED ring light, Nikon flash and spare batteries and memory cards.Feedback
The only things I would say for anyone wanting to try photographing lightning are number 1: be patient, I took about 300 shots that night and were only about 20 that I liked and kept. Number 2: no light . two reasons for this. light pollution will ruin the shot completely ( unless you are shooting over a cityscape or something ) and secondly I find that my night vision is ruined if there is any light. Night vision helps to set up the shot ie: see the sky, clouds etc to get the best shot.
