Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at the Clunes Motor show, which is held annually in the Victorian country town of Clunes. Although because of the recent pandemic it hasn't been held for the last two years.

Time

I wanted to get to the car show early, however family and unexpectedly large crowds meant that I didn't actually get there till around lunchtime, by which time it was nearly 40 C (104 F). But at least the bright sunlight gave the paintwork a nice sparkle.

Lighting

Because the sun was quite high I was worried the shadows might be a bit flat and lifeless. However the bright sunlight made the paint and chrome pop nicely. I would have liked to use a polarising filter to dampen the reflections, but didn't have one. So was careful of the shooting angle.

Equipment

I used my walk around camera, at the time, a Nikon D5000 and af-s 18-55. I actually love the AF-S 18-55. It's a nice zoom range for street (or car show) lens, and as I usually shoot between f5.6 to f8 and that happens to be the lenses sweet spot. I suits me fine.

Inspiration

I have always loved classic cars and in my youth worked in several classic and exotic car dealerships, so am always attracted to car shows. this Pontiac was in a group of several other American classics, but I liked the colour and chrome work on this one.

Editing

I never like to process my photo's to much and this one was no exception. As I shoot RAW some processing is required, (sharpening, white balance, exposure etc) beyond the standard processing on this image however, I did do some extra tweaking. I masked all the chrome and headlights and upped the contrast on them slightly to give them some more pop, and brightened them slightly using the levels tool. I also masked the corner of the windscreen and blurred it a bit more as I felt it was detracting from the image (although it would have looked weird for it not to be there at all).

In my camera bag

At the time I took this photo, my camera bag consisted of a Nikon D5000 with 18-55 attached and a Nikon D70 with 55-200. two spare batteries (one for each camera). Things have changed a bit now as I have two bags I can potentially take. My main walk around bag consists of an Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mk2 body and an Olympus OM-D Em5 mk2. An M.Zuiko 12-50mm, M.Zuiko 40-150 and either Panosonic 25mm or M.Zuiko 45mm (depending on my mood). I have dubbed this setup my street bag. The other setup I have (which I dub my Landscape bag) is a pair of D7200 bodies, AF-P 18-55 and 70-300 lens plus a AF-s 35mm, or a Nikon AF-S 50mm.

Feedback

My advice is the same when taking any photo. Don't set out to capture a killer photo. Set out to enjoy the day and whatever activity that includes. I find that if I set out to get a specific photo or to get a killer photo, it just doesn't work. You place too much pressure on yourself. Instead, soak up the atmosphere of the place and relax. Photo's will present themselves, just be ready for that moment and have the gear with you that you are comfortable using.
