What a clever shot, a superb image of a very every day subject, a nice composition too.

Behind The Lens

In Shibuya, Tokyo, just at the base of the Fukuras building. The escalator takes you up to the mall entrance and also the overpass bridges connecting you to the Ginza Line station.
In the evening around 21:00, or 9:00pm.
Just their ambient light coming from above the escalator.
Sony a6500 and the Sigma 30mm F1.4. The camera is my usual walk around camera, combined with different lenses. It's small enough for most bags and backpacks and can also fit in a coat or jacket pocket with smaller lenses.
I was walking around Shibuya that evening taking photos and had already previously contemplated shooting something more abstract like this escalator. And while I was going up the escalator simply checked through the viewfinder to find the right angle and composition for the photo.
Yes I did some post-processing, but nothing crazy. Slightly adjusted curves, highlights and shadows and contrast for the image to have the impact I wanted it to have.
In my camera bag
Currently I usually carry around the Sony a6500 and the Sigma 18 to 50mm F2.8, which close to a 24-70mm full frame lens. Although I do like the form factor of the Sony a6500 I am seriously considering now upgrading to full frame.
This is actually simply one one of those spontaneous shots. You have taken the escalator many times at different times of the day and you observe the pattern and light thinking this might make for a good photo until you simply try and take it. Don't restrict yourself and play with what you have in front of you.
