The throat feathers of the Rubythroated Hummer are strange because they change colors with the light reflecting off of them. They change from gloss black to the ruby red seen here with different light angles. This mature male image was taken at our home in southeast Missouri.

Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at our home in Southeast Missouri, USA Our house is home to close to 100 humers each summer.

Time

This one was taken around 9 in the morning when the sun is shining on the flying hummers but not super strong.

Lighting

Male hummers are super hard to photo because their ruby colored throat feathers change from ruby red to mate black depending on the lighting so you have to have the right light and the right angle to get good results. This photo does not show the brilliant color seen sometimes because of the indirect lighting

Equipment

I use a Nikon D90 with a Nikkor 70X300mm VR lens set on manual focus on a tripod with a manual shutter trigger

Inspiration

The Ruby Throat Hummingbird is an amazing animal. They are so fast, can change directions immediately in mid flight, stop on a dime and the body positrons because of this create an infinite variety of photograph possibilities.

Editing

I shoot in RAW formatt so all of my post processing is done in Photoshop CS6

In my camera bag

Every where I go I carry a Nikon D90 - Nikon D40X - Nikkor 18X44mm Nikkor lens - Nikkor 70X300mm VR lens - Nikkor 50mm lens - Sigma 10X20mm Ultra wide angle lens.

Feedback

If you want to capture hummingbirds in flight you need to manually focus your lens on the area around your feeder where the birds most often hover. The focal distance between front and back focal ranges is less than 2 inches if you are shooting a 200 or 300 zoom lens from a distance of approximately 10 feet so expect to shoot around 200 images for every 5 image that you are able to keep as good ones. .
