Decided to set up a feeder to see who would show up. This little guy staked a claim and spends the mornings and early evenings sitting on a perch below "his" feeder. After I id'd him and discovered he sports a purple collar (my favorite color), it became my mission to capture it. Done!

Behind The Lens

Location

I have set up my apartment balcony as a green space for me and some feathered friends.

Time

My balcony faces west so fortunately I have good morning light/shade until just after noon.

Lighting

I did place a large sliver reflector on the ground under the feeder to help with some shadows. I had no idea it would reveal the deep purple feathers!

Equipment

I used a Nikon D5, Nikon 70-200, 2.8 and the Peak Design carbon fiber tripod in natural light.

Inspiration

I love the challenge of capturing fast moving objects and after the first few visits, I thought I’d give it a shot. This one turned out so good, my sister, who loves hummers, asked for a 24x36 copy.

Editing

Not much in post, lightened the shadows a bit to bring out the purple more and a smidge of sharpening for the feather.

In my camera bag

Nikon D5 x2, D750x1, Nikon 24-70, 105 macro and 70-200, Sigma 150-600,

Feedback

Set up before or between the hummers visits. Let them get use you and practice!
