Behind The Lens

Location

I wander the Endless Mountains in search of wildflowers, as well as detouring into people's gardens.

Time

The ever-changing color of light, sunrise to sunset, means choosing the best time of day for any given flower and its color. I captured this flower late morning.

Lighting

Extremely important for shooting outdoors is time of day. After sunrise and before sunset the color of light is warm. Be aware though that the warm at sunrise and sunset is different. Mid-day light is cooler and light directly from the sun tends to harsh...with hard shadows. Rarely discussed is the basic concept that the camera captures light, i.e., you are not photographing a flower, only the light reflected from the flower. Remembering this is significant to successful image creation.

Equipment

I'm a Nikon guy. The mainstay of my shooting is with my Z7 and a Z105 macro and Z20-200.

Inspiration

Love of flowers: their colors, patterns, and textures.

Editing

My computer holds three editing programs. The one I use most often is the simplest. It is my organizer. I use it to crop, rotate, and resize...and that's about it. Faststone.com [free]

In my camera bag

I keep it simple: camera, two lenses, monopod, and tripod.

Feedback

Understand light...think before you shoot...if it's worth shooting once, it's worth shooting more than once...bracket your exposures...change perspective [just the same as bracketing]. Pre-plan before you consider a project, before you pick up your camera.
