Behind The Lens

Location

Near Salvagnac-Cajarc, a small town in southwest France.

Time

At 1:22 p.m.

Lighting

Very difficult light! At 1:22 p.m. in August, in southwest France, the light is zenithal and massive. Fortunately, an assistant on my right points a white reflector at the model.

Equipment

Canon EOS 40D, Sigma 55-200 zoom lens, reflector.

Inspiration

The place and the light.

Editing

As usual, I opened my RAW file on DxO Photolab where I made the first adjustments, then switched to Lightroom where I do most of my post-processing, and finally processed the fine details on Photoshop.

In my camera bag

I used to have a Canon 5D Mark II, but since it broke down, I've mainly been using the Canon EOS 460D. However, I think you need a full-frame camera. For portraits and nudes, I prefer to use prime lenses. For more general use, I really like the Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM lens. For reportage shots, I sometimes like to use the Canon EOS M and the Canon EF-M 22mm f/2 STM when I want to be particularly discreet.

Feedback

In the case of backlighting, when the light behind the model is so powerful, you obviously need to shoot in RAW, because in JPEG it's impossible not to burn out the whites. I also think it's essential to use a reflector aimed at the model. You can also light the model with a flash in a softbox. I don't recommend using a flash installed directly on the camera, as it gives a harsh light and not everyone has the talent of Ellen von Unwerth! Finally, you need to be highly skilled in post-processing.
