Behind The Lens

Location

I took the picture in the forest near my hometown Rieschweiler-Mühlbach in Germany.

Time

I usually go out early to take advantage of the morning sun. Unfortunately the weather was very bad that morning. Very poor in contrast and colour. Not particularly good conditions for forest photography. The picture was taken around 8 a.m.

Lighting

As already mentioned, the weather was very bad that morning. It was foggy and the colors and contrasts were scarce from the start. However, I was lucky that the sun was right in the middle of the forest path and the raw file already showed a nice lighting mood, which I worked out further in post-processing.

Equipment

This picture was taken with my old Sony a58 camera with the SAM 18-55/F3.5-5.6 lens on the K&F SA254T1 tripod.

Inspiration

The idea for the picture came to me quite spontaneously when I was still annoyed about the bad weather. I saw the sun's rays shining through the trees so beautifully and thought I'd try to capture the spectacle.

Editing

Like all my pictures, I took this one as a raw file and then edited it in Camera Raw and Photoshop. I first adjusted the contrast and saturation. Then I increased the lighting effect and changed the colors of the image. A slight Orton effect should round off the image effect.

In my camera bag

This picture was taken with my old camera, the Sony A58. Today I mostly photograph with the Sony A7III in combination with the Sony/Zeiss 16-35mm/4. In addition, I always have the Tamron 90mm/2.8 macro in my backpack and, for animal shoots, my Sony 70-200mm/4. My accessories consist of the K&F square filter system with GND 8 / 16 and ND 16 / 64 / 1000. In addition, I always have a Rollei remote release and my K&F SA254T1 tripod with me

Feedback

In the end, the most important factor in this picture was actually the combination of the morning sun and poor, low-contrast weather. To be honest, the choice of the picture really surprised me a lot, because it's not really one of my favorite pictures, because there's a lot of editing on the picture and I like my pictures more naturally. If you still intend to take such a picture, you should get up early. Of course it is also important to know a suitable forest clearing or forest path where the morning sun can create the desired image look. An even better effect can be achieved if the forest is still slightly shrouded in fog.
