Location
This image was taken in my daughter's bedroom at home. Being a studio trained photographer, I often forget to capture the every day moments at home and was thrilled to capture this image of my youngest daughter sharing a quiet moment with her best friend. Her long, black hair was laying behind them and created the black background effect that somehow masked the brightly decorated bedroom.Time
It was mid-morning when I happened to walk by my daughter's room and noticed her and her cat cuddling in the sunshine. I quickly grabbed my "carry around camera" out of my purse and captured the shot.Lighting
I'm used to manipulating light in the studio, or at the very least using eternal flashes with diffusers when I do shoot natural light. However, at this moment I had none of that with me and had to rely on the morning light filtering in through the one south facing window in the room. I really love the soft effect it created.Equipment

I often neglect to capture the little moments within my own family. It's too easy to get distracted with clients, or even formal shoots with my own kids. So when I saw my daughter on her bed with this very old cat she loves so dearly, I wanted to capture the moment while he is still with us. They share a very special bond and I feel like this image really captured that and will give her something she can always hold on to and remember.Editing
Because I grabbed the camera I carry around for snapshots, this image was shot as a jpeg. However, it really didn't require many adjustments at all. I removed a couple of stray hairs I found distracting and brought the crop in just a tiny bit. It was one of those times I really loved it out of the camera.In my camera bag
My main camera is a Canon 7D Mark II and I LOVE it. Right now I am focusing on nature and wildlife photography, so my go to lens is a Canon 100-400mm Mark II with a Canon 1.4mm extender. I carry a Canon 100mm for Macro, a 50mm 1.4 for portrait work, as well as a 28-135mm all purpose lens. I do carry a Canon 10-18 wide angle as well. My back-up or "casual" camera is a Canon Rebel SL1. I leave the 18-55mm lens on it most of the time. I rarely use a tripod out of the studio, and am quite attached to my Cotton Carrier which allows me to carry two bodies hands-free when I'm out shooting wildlife.Feedback
I would encourage other photographers to slow down and recognize the tiny every day moments. Capture those things that you love about your children, your pets, your home. Even a child sitting on a bed in a messy pre-teen bedroom can turn into a beautiful portrait if you shoot from the right angle and maximize the light you have. Not everything has to be planned or orchestrated and sometimes moments like this one remind you why you began to love photography in the first place.
