Behind The Lens

I shot this image in my garage/studio
This was an afternoon shoot. My model had travelled up from Birmingham UK to my home here in the Scottish Borders for an afternoon session. I hadn't appreciated she had come directly as she was booked for another shoot more local the next day and I had assumed she was staying nearby. So it was an early start for her to get to me for 12.30pm and a four and half hour drive.
I used a simple one light set-up with the main softbox positioned above and right with a white background behind.
I use Canon EF lenses and EOS DSLR's so this shot was on my 5D Mk11 with 24-70mm at 66mm using my newly acquired 'Elinchrom D-Lite RX 4/4 Softbox To Go Kit' which consists of two heads and a rectangular and smaller octobox sofbox. Ideal for my small studio space.
I am trying to improve my people portraiture skills and whilst I have used friends in the past, I wanted to shoot with a professional model, so when the opportunity arose I booked her for a four hour shoot. I had seen many of her shots and loved her dark curly hair and overall look. I like to keep things simple and she was great posing with her moves that I might not otherwise have obtained on my own. It was a team effort.
This shot is pretty much straight out of the camera with just a little post processing in Lightroom where I toned down the Texture for a general softening look. She had great skin and so a lot of retouching just wasn't necessary.
In my camera bag
I have all Canon cameras and lenses and my 'bag' has the 5D Mk11 with 24-70mm and a 7D with my 70-200mm. I can squeeze in a 17-40mm for more wide range too. I have a Speedlight flash, polarising and Graduated filters, remote release, spare batteries and memory cards.
Study other shots you have seen elsewhere and trying to understand the lighting set-up used then try to replicate those principles with your model. These techniques can then be added to your skill base for professional portraiture.
