Location
This was taken during Carfest North, a fundraising festival held at the Bolesworth Estate. Trackside views are popular and hard to get but as a carer I had access to the accessible viewing platform, which gave me the advantage of a little extra height to see over the barriers.Time
This was taken in the middle of the day, as you can see from the shadow under the car.Lighting
A bright overhead sun gave sharp distinct shadows but made for short exposures, not exactly what I was after in trying to get a clear shot of the car but capturing the sense of motion. I had to stop down the aperture to slow the exposure so theat the background blurred nicelyEquipment
Cannon 800D in AI servo mode to track the car, single centre point AF. I normally use back button focusing but that doesn't work with AI so had to set the camera back to default, focus on half pressing the shutter, track the car as if fills the frame and time the release to get the framing. Lens was a Sigma 28-125mm zoom. I like this lens a lot and use it for almost everythingInspiration
I like to learn new techniques and I hadn't tried this type of panning shot before. I learned a lot quite quickly! The cars were all travelling at similar speeds so i was able to try a few shots , see the results and then adjust settings or technique until I got it right.Editing
I always put my photos through lightroom but I don't normally do a huge amount of processing. In this case I went through my normal process but thought the age of the car was crying out for a B&W treatment, so went back and reprocessed. Selected B&W as the colour set, adjusted White balance to sunlight, tweaked the levels slightly to help contrast and that was more or les it, apart from adding some vignette at the end to replicate an older feel.In my camera bag
Apart from my camera, I usually carry 3 lenses, my wide angle for landscapes, sigma 28-125 general purpose lens (good for just about anything) and my 100-300 zoom for longer shots of people, wildlife or macros. I also carry a tripod that converts into a monopod (very useful for steadying longer shots).Feedback
Decide of what your're going for, think about settings (go manual you won't regret it!). Practice - shot assess, adjust and repeat until you're happy.
