One of my favorite places outside of Flagstaff, AZ is the extinct cinder cone volcano you see here. It has been uniquely eroded to produce a chamber of hoodoos and corridors throughout its interior space. It's a blast to explore and truly an adult playground.

Location
This was taken at a rather unique location - it's an extinct cinder cone volcano located outside of Flagstaff Arizona. Flagstaff is surrounded by cinder cones however this particular one is unique for the way the interior of the cone has completely eroded away. The mountain is now in a U-shape and you can hike directly into the vent where you'll find a scene like this. The volcanic material has eroded into multiple hoodoos and passages that create stunning shapes and patterns. Really an amazing place to explore!Time
This was shot in the late afternoon as some rather intense looking rain clouds began to close in.Lighting
This area is particularly difficult to shoot on a day with normal sunlight since there are always parts that are heavily exposed and shaded at the same time. The cone is a U-shape pointing slightly NE so the outer edges get most of the sun while the interior remains shaded. These clouds really balanced out the lighting and helped me capture everything.Equipment
This was a hand held shot on a Sony a6100 using a Rokinon 12mm 2.8. No supplimental flash was used.Inspiration
This cinder cone is one of my favorite places to take new friends who are visiting me in Flagstaff. The hoodoos create really interesting shapes and patterns and I love finding unique perspectives that incorporate those into the frame.Editing
The most significant adjustments were to the blacks and whites within the tone curve. I also dropped the highlights and boosted the whites for a slightly more dramatic look. For color, I made some changes to the orange tones and took the yellows down significantly. In my camera bag
My focus is more towards the hike itself so I like to pack as light as possible. Usually I'll just carry my Sony a6100 and two lenses. A 12mm Rokinon and a 18-135mm Sony lense.Feedback
Don't be afraid of bad weather! Usually it will add a bit of drama or interest to a shot. It certainly made a huge difference at this location.
