Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken not far away from the main city of Bali while I was excitedly scouting out new locations to test my newly bought drone.

Time

I was supposed to get up at dawn for this photo but I couldn’t get up so instead I ended up going in the afternoon at 4-5pm, this goes to show that not every one is perfect haha

Lighting

A good reason to go at sunset time was because I wanted the light to hit the side of the trees to give the image more shadows, or else at midday the photo would look more 2D from the harsh direct hit of the sun.

Equipment

I was using my new DJI Mavic Air 2 bought on my 18th birthday.

Inspiration

I’ve seen loads of photos similar to this one but most of them are either roads in forests, deserts or cities, so I decided to find a mangrove to switch things up a little bit.

Editing

Not much processing was involved here, only a few tweaks with the saturation, shadows etc, and changing the tint of the water a little bit.

In my camera bag

I usually do macro so the Nikon D7500 and 105mm F 2.8 macro never leaves my bag, and also the speedlite and a specialized flash diffuser is really important to get that perfect lighting. Other than that I only have the DJI Mavic Air 2 that I newly bought, as a compensation for not having any all rounder lens or wide angle lens for landscapes other than a simple macro lens.

Feedback

I would say going to more places and exploring the unknown is a good way to start, looking for the perfect lighting condition is very important as well, try to go at dawn or near sunset, but an overcast day would be nice too. Previsualising is a key factor in taking good photos as well, or you would e wasting your time taking all kinds of photos everywhere only to find out that when the shot comes your battery is already gone, so try to devolving a sense of that by taking more photos, so you’ll know how to make a shot look good when that time comes.
