Location
This photo was taken at New Brighton on the Wirral peninsula, which is one of my favourite places to go no matter the time of day or year. It is located at the point at which the river Mersey enters the Irish Sea. The sun was setting over Liverpool bay and the Irish Sea. The tide was also coming in but was still low enough that i was able to change my position so that the sun was setting down the side of the lighthouse. It was a long exposure of 4 seconds.Time
It was just after 20.00, about 30 minutes before the sun would finally slip below the horizonLighting
The sky was totally clear of clouds and i was shooting almost directly into the sun, but had the lighthouse positioned in such a way that i was able to get the sun star without any flaresEquipment
It was shot on a Nikon Z6 using the 24-70mm (f/4S), (at 35mm and f/9) with a Lee little stopper filter to obtain a 4 second exposure. This was placed on a Manfrotto 290 Extra tripod and i used the cameras 2 second delay.Inspiration
I just love the colours that you can get at sunrise and sunset and love visiting New Brighton and the Wirral, so wanted to catch the lighthouse with the sun setting. As it was i was lucky with the tide (which i always check before going) which enabled me to have space into which i could move to try and get the best composition.Editing
Whenever i take images that have a mostly flat horizon or have the sea in the background i always straighten the horizon, i would also normally add slight vignette to draw the eye into the image , but in this case i did not as to not change the tone of the colours. The only other editing i did was to add a border, i played around with several versions but decided on a crisp clean white border. In my camera bag
I use an Atlas ruck sack as i am a bit of a pack rat! i had my Z6 with 24-70mm f/4S and the 14-30mm f/4S. I may also throw in my Tamron 100-400mm Di Vc USD (just in case) along with my Nikon D800E. To this i added a selection of filters and a Lee filter holder. Apart from a camera and a selection of lenses i always make sure to pack spare charged batteries (at least 2), have a cover for the camera for wet weather, lens cloths and wipes a dust blower and brush. Me being me i also have my meds, waterproofs etc.Feedback
Dont be afraid to try and try again, i took around 30 images very similar to this and this was the only one i was happy with/ So if you are not taking the photos for a client then go with what you want and like. Also try and go to the same place in different weather, times of day or year. I personally will be going back again as i would have liked some clouds in the image, but again that is something i would like to change. Also if you see other photographers there go chat to them ask them what they are doing, see what kit they are using and how they are using it. But most of all enjoy the whole process and keep that shutter button at the ready!
