Location
Behind the railway line from the border to Gouvy there are more wildflowers than anywhere else. So I often go there after work to check it out. There isn't much diversity in the East of Belgium and this is one of the best spots.Time
After work, so it would have been about an hour before sunset. About as sunny as it gets here.Lighting
Provided by the arctic sun of Eastern Belgium. It even was a whopping 22ºC if I remember right.Equipment
Originally I intended to shoot dragonflies and buzzards so I didn't take my macro.. This is the glorious 200-500 f5.6 on the D500 which I bought second hand in July and took already 3000 shots with it. Not bad :). These 2 are a great combination for wildlife and insects and all sorts of things. Only if you want bokeh-to-die-for or long distance shots use the 300 2.8.Inspiration
Did a detour on the way to my favourite nature reserve because thought it might be warm, where plants overgrow the subgrade and spilt ballast. Watched some butterflies and followed them around. This particular one helpfully posed on various flowers. One needs to know their habits to get decent shots and in an hour I had found various species. Don't expect many species in this cold climate :)Editing
I applied a tiny bit of denoising after I cropped a bit on the right and and upped contrast and exposure by 0.35, says Exposure. That's it.In my camera bag
Depends on where I am and my intentions. a 24-70, a 180mm macro lens (why on earth did Sigma stop making them) and the 200'500 or the good old 300 2.8 depending on light and needs. My 17mm from 1982 if I intend to take buildings.Feedback
Whereever you are, take the time to observe nature after work and when the climate allows it. Check naturalista.org or similar site to find out more about the local species and then go and look for them. For me it was a totally new world after Costa Rica and I will value the diverity even more when I get back. Even if you would love to find a 5 legged unicorn, make the best of what is there. Every butterfly, bird, lizard or wildflower is beautiful. So is every other creature ! ( I'll pass on dengue mozzies, ticks and tapeworm please)
