Behind The Lens

Since we don't live near the ocean, we went to a river near our home, where there was a perfect dock for our needs. Marc-André, the retoucher of our photography duo, would make the tree line on the other side of the shore disappear when the photo is edited, thus giving the impression of an infinite immensity, like the sea.
We took this photo very early in the morning, at sunrise, creating this beautiful ambient light worthy of a fairy tale. Also, by doing the photo shoot at such an early hour, the water was very still, which we needed to keep the little paper boats as stable as possible. And with the water so calm, there was something really peaceful about the scene.
As mentioned above, the light was natural, of a very particular color and intensity, generously offered by the sun which rose slowly over the river.
We used our Canon EOS R camera, and a Canon EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens.
Like Carolyn, the model, creative director, but also the stylist of our duo, had already made some costumes and concepts with paper in many of its forms and just loved it, she wanted to challenger herself by using the classic small paper boats to create a concept around them. She therefore had the idea of ??creating a very magical image, which would evoke the dream of escaping far away to discover the unknown. This is how she created this character dressed in a full costume under the theme of sailboats, who would also have at her side even more boats, held in her hands with ropes, accompanying her, as a symbol of her travel aspirations.
In addition to the tree line in the distance which has been removed, some boats have been digitally repaired since with handling and water they were a little damaged in a few places. Marc-André also did some beauty retouching, worked on the tones, and he added an even more magical effect to the already so unreal scene.
In my camera bag
We always have our Canon 24-105 mm lens used for this photo, a Tamron wide angle, a Sigma 50 mm 1.4 Art, a Canon 50 mm Macro, a trigger Godox, and extra batteries!
Preparation is important: don’t skip on the details. Explore, go further in your ideas and creativity, add complexity and unusual to your projects. All these elements will surely give a special twist to your pictures.
