Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken at my house in Frederick, Maryland. I have studied photography for over 6 years. I'm always looking for new ways to grow and learn different techniques to use towards my photographs.

Time

This photograph is very special to me. I remember walking in my backyard enjoying the nice weather outside around noon. When I heard something rustling in a small pile of brush we have at the end of our property. There laying down was a small baby deer all curled up. It was so intriguing, immediately got my camera to capture this moment. Didn't have time to get my tripod, so I did my best to hold my camera steady. Had to distance myself so I wouldn't startle the little deer. Upon taking the photo, I noticed it had blue eyes. One of my best afternoons being able to experience that moment. This was taken May 31, 2020 at 1:43 PM

Lighting

For this photograph I was outside using the natural light that was given to me on this day. There was some cloud covering the sun defusing the harsh shine giving it more of a softer feel to the photo. I was hoping that when taking this photo it would help give a soft effect to the overall image. There was enough lighting to not over power the highlights on the deer body. Still showing details without losing any definition. This showcased the overall features of the baby deer.

Equipment

The equipment I used was a Canon 70D, with a 70-200mm lens. Also the aperture was at 2.8, shutter speed is 125 with ISO 400. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

I have always had an interest in nature and wildlife. National Geographic has been a big influence on how I perceive the photography world. Finding this little deer peaked my interest when I saw it had blue eyes. I have never seen any thing like that before and wanted to showcase how unique this animal was in my eyes. To me capturing this moment made me look at things differently to appreciate the little details that show in my photographs.

Editing

Editing this photo I did minor touch ups. Darkened the background slightly to bring out the brighter colors of the deers face. Touching up some of the highlights in the ears to show more definition. Slightly lightened the eye to that way the blue could stand out more. Saturation was used to give it a bit more color.

In my camera bag

The equipment I carry in my bag consists of the following: Canon 70D camera, 50mm lens, 18-135mm lens, 70-200mm lens, memory card, memory card holder, light meter, extra battery and a battery charger.

Feedback

Dealing with wildlife you need to learn that timing is key. You never know when you will come across an opportunity to get the perfect shot. Sometimes you can be at the right place and right time or you can miss your chance to capture the photograph. You have to get your self out there to find the shot instead of waiting for it to present itself.
