Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Naples Pier. Situated at the west end of 12th Avenue South, the iconic Naples Pier is Naples' most-visited attraction. The Historic pier is also known for fishing, bird-watching, dolphin-spotting & scenic sunset views.

Time

This location is an hour away from my house, therefore I left with plenty of time to arrive and set up my equipment. Sunset started to happen, and I took a lot of photos, but this was one of the last shots I took right before the Sun finally disappeared into the horizon.

Lighting

I recently started to like Long Exposure photography and decided to start using MANUAL mode instead of Auto. This was very scary for me because I never like to miss the shot by making mistakes while playing with settings. But... I decided to read a lot on the subject of lighting and knowing my camera. I also went to other locations to get hands on practice, and it all started to make sense. Shooting against the sun proved to be a challenge for sure. I kept asking myself, how do I not overexpose the image? How do I not underexpose the bridge and water? Well patience and practice paid off, after more than 20 wrong shots I decided to set the camera on F/11 ISO 100 Shutter 30/1 also using a 10stop filter. And this was the final image. Lesson learned.... understanding lighting is very important in photography.

Equipment

This was taken with Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, a tripod, and a new B&W 10stop filter.

Inspiration

Learning long exposure photography really inspired me. I have been wanting to finally say I took a great long exposure shot!! In this location I really wanted to show the leading lines on the bridge drawing the viewers eyes to the sunset. I was taking the photos under the bridge and decided to move next to it right at the last minute. I looked thru my camera lens and realized that the image would look amazing with the sun shining thru the bridge. I set my camera settings, waited for the waves to retrieve back and took the shot. The reflections, shadows and colors turned out beautiful, and I am very proud of this image.

Editing

I used Photoshop to darken the beginning of the bridge a little that way the main the focus was the long leading lines of the bridge and the sunset.

Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, a tripod, and a new B&W 10stop filter.

Feedback

Always be patient.... just because the shot did not come out perfect the first time that does not mean you quit. Learn the camera and what you should do in certain scenarios and understand lighting. Anything can be achieved if you really put your mind to it.
