Captured in Nags Head, NC.
Here lies the remains of the Ocean Pursuit, another unwitting victim of the treacherous waters of North Carolina's Outer Banks. This stretch of the NC coast is better know as the "Graveyard of the Atlantic" as more than 5,000 ships are said to have been lost here dating back to the early 1500s.
The Ocean Pursuit, the graveyard's latest victim, was lost just over a year ago in the Oregon Inlet. It was a commercial scallop vessel that had been pushed off course by high winds and strong currents on March 1st, 2020.
The ship was originally drawn into the shallows during high tide, when this location is completely surrounded by water. As the tide goes out, the boat's true fate becomes apparent... It's grounded within a small sandy stretch of beach.
Over the past year, the Ocean Pursuit has been slowly sinking into the sand -- a little more with each passing tide. The entire bow of the ship has now been swallowed up, with Mother Nature looking to reclaim the rest in short order. There are said to be plans to have the ship removed from its sandy grave, but no date has been set as of yet.
Hopefully they won't wait too long to dig it out, as the longer it stays, the further down it will continue to sink... The graveyard does love to bury its own, and will stop at nothing to finish the job.
