Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Inlet, New York on Fourth Lake.

Time

This photo was taken during a summer sunset.

Lighting

The day before, I saw that the sun would go right through the windows of the gazebo if I could get the right angle. The next evening, I walked out onto some docks and found that angle. A group of women happened to be around the gazebo celebrating and taking pictures of the sunset. The combination of the sunset sky with silhouettes was what I was aiming for.

Equipment

I used a Sony A6000 on a Manfrotto BeFree Aluminum Tripod.

Inspiration

I've always enjoyed sunset photography and the ability of the sun to make the sky different every evening. This gazebo was constructed on an island accessible by a small walking bridge. The location itself was beautiful even without the sunset.

Editing

Typically I adjust lighting in Lightroom. For this photo I dropped the highlights and shadows a lot in order to reveal the colors of the sky and to make the silhouettes.

In my camera bag

I typically carry my Sony A6000, or occasionally I'll use my work camera which is a Canon 5D Mark III with a 24-105 lens.

Feedback

Make sure you're set up well in advance of the sunset! You'd be surprised just how quickly the sun can set when you're trying to photograph it.
