Until the early 1920s, most astronomers thought that the Milky Way contained all the stars in the Universe. Following the 1920 Great Debate between the astronomers Harlow Shapley and Heber Curtis, observations by Edwin Hubble showed that the Milky Way is just one of many galaxies.
Galileo Galilei first resolved the band of light into individual stars with his telescope in 1610. He is credited with discovering the Milky Way is made up of stars.
If you look right above the roof of The Ark, close to the center is a really bright star ~that is the Butterfly Nebula!
Just above the Butterfly Nebula and to the left, almost in the center of the photograph is another really bright star ~that is the Lagoon Nebula!
Now, look towards the right of the photograph, you will see yet another really bright star ~that is the star Antares! and those bright stars surrounding Antares make up a structure called The Rho Ophiuchi ! You might be able to see faint dark lines running back towards the the Milky Way. Those lines run smack into the Largest Dark Nebula in the Sky! It looks exactly like a horse, head, 4 legs, tail and all! That is a structure called The Great Dark Horse Nebula !! It is called great because it is the largest dark nebula of all. It is also one of the few structures you will see that actually resembles its name sake. Personally, i can make out 2 riders on the horse, they second rider has long hair but, I don't think anyone really counts that.
In between the Butterfly Nebula and the Lagoon Nebula is a tiny, tiny star ....that is the location of the center of The Milky Way Galaxy!
