Behind The Lens

We needed a lot of space for this huge costume and all the color samples that would fill the entire floor around. It also required height for this concept because the character would be very tall, in addition to being photographed in a ground angle view.
As usual, we worked during the morning, as we are full of energy at that period of the day, and that we like having plenty of time in front of us, especially when it comes to a very complex project to carry out.
The light had to be placed high enough to properly illuminate the face of the model, but in an angle allowing to highlight the whole costume as well, creating beautiful reflections on the pieces of self-adhesive vinyl film covering the outfit. Another flash was placed lower in order to enlighten the samples on the ground enough so as not to lose details.
We used our Canon EOS R camera, a Canon EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens, and Godox AD600 as well as Godox AD200 flashes.
We had an incredible amount of automotive paint and self-adhesive vinyl film color swatches that were given to us. All these colors and finishes had inspired Carolyn, the artistic director, costume creator, stylist and model of our artistic duo, the idea of creating a flamboyant circus master suit with the color samples. The character would be very tall, impressive, in the middle of a mountain of color swatches, and she had therefore created pants long and wide enough for each leg to hide a stool on which she would stand. The colors giving a lot of life to the photo, there was a need for action, movement to the scene! Carolyn had planned many braids to her hairstyle, which would twirl around behind her top hat, while she would stand in a very ample and dynamic pose.
Marc-André, the duo's photographer and retoucher, fixed all the samples that had bent during Carolyn's various poses and did some beauty retouching, working on the tones as well. He also added a few more swatches to the ground to increase the impact.
In my camera bag
We always have our Canon 24-105 mm used for this photo, a Tamron wide angle, a Sigma 50 mm 1.4 Art, a Canon 50 mm Macro, a trigger Godox, and extra batteries!
Preparation is important; don’t skip on the details. And don’t be afraid to put yourselves in uncomfortable environments for your shots! Explore, go further in your ideas and creativity, add complexity and unusual to your projects. All these elements will surely give a special twist to your pictures.
