Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was takin in the wake of my college years on an early Sony Alpha series DSLR. I am a classically trained photographer on film stock so I have tried to translate what I learned from that over to digital. This shot was taken in Springfield Missouri on the foot Bridge off the historic commercial street.

Time

This picture was created of the wake of text messages I received from my good friend Christie. She was an aspiring model and since I have gotten my new DSLR camera she really wanted pictures in every outfit she purchased. This was one of the 2nd to last outfits we shot. I remember needing a bounce card and hassled a restaurant for a cardboard box with a white top. Being able to bounce the little bit of light up from the passing sunset made this image magical since back then pulling from shadows was a bit of a stretch. Overall this was shot around 6PM.

Lighting

This picture was created purely by chance. Was in the right place at the right time with the right amount of bounce made from a trash cardboard box with a white top. You can still make magic utilizing the things around you.

Equipment

This was shot on an old Sony a390 handheld with the stock 18-55mm kit lens and a cardboard bounce card.

Inspiration

I was at the time in film school and had an amazing friend who loved to have pictures takin. This was the 3rd outfit of this shoot and this footbridge made the perfect spot for this photo.

Editing

So After Covid hit I started going through a lot of old photos and reprocessed them for upload. Giving some new breath to and old project can really put some things into new perspectives. I post processed this through camera raw then did a little frequency separation and Color Luts. Overall that is it for the processing side of things.

In my camera bag

For my normal gear I run and gun with a Sony a7II and a 50mm 1.8. For my most magical images I shoot on a Sony Cine Alta 85mm Cine Alta lens. The mix of these 2 lenses have given me some of the most gorgeous portraits I have ever produced.

Feedback

As much of a collegiate response I would love to give for advice for capturing an image the only thing I can really think of is this... Just start. You can spend hours upon hours thinking of poses to do and getting caught up in your own head on where or why to shot and you loose the magic of just going out and having fun. Its ok to make mistakes its ok to have images that are not posed, In fact some of my best images I set a pose then just said have fun with it. This was one of those shots. The more you're having fun and the more comfortable your subject is it will always show in an image. Get out there, be safe, and have fun.
