I shot this at Gates Pass just outside of Tucson, Arizona. I was finishing up my degree program at SNHU and needed a few more shots for my final portfolio. I headed up to the pass with the model, Amaris, and my wife, Cheryl, hoping to get a few portraits that fit my theme.Time
This shot was taken at sunset. We originally went up there to get some shots in the wind… and hadn’t planned on any true sunset shots; however, as we crested the rocks, the lighting was just too good to pass up.Lighting
I learned a lot during this outing about shooting into the sun. It took a couple tries to figure it out… but once I got the hang of it, the lighting and the model worked together to make something special.Equipment
I was carrying both my D750 and my D850 that day, but I shot this with the 850 and an 85mm f/1.8 lens.Inspiration
There was something about the golden hues and the wind whipping up over the cliff that just screamed to take the picture.Editing
I don’t normally do a lot of post-processing unless I’m combining pictures. For this shot, I did some minor changes to exposure and contrast and that’s about it.In my camera bag
Like I said earlier, I almost always carry both my D750 and my D850… but I also carry a selection of lenses (mostly prime) and a strobe with remote.Feedback
My biggest advice is to get out there and shoot. Every time I take a new picture, I think it’s my best shot yet… and then I grow and learn, knowing my next shot is going to be even better. Find somewhere interesting, head out with enough time to set up and find the best spot, and then fire away!
