Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken during a portrait session at the Saler beach in Valencia.

Time

The photo was taken around noon, which although it is not usually the best time for photos because of the light, that day the light was soft enough for the shot.

Lighting

Although it is commonly said that midday light is the worst possible light for portraits, that day thanks to a few clouds that shaded the sunlight, the light was soft and easy to take, I also used an on-camera flash with a diffuser.

Equipment

The shot was taken with the Olympus OM1 and the M.zuiko 40-150mm f/2.8 lens supported by the Olympus FL-50 flash.

Inspiration

During the portrait session, in one of the shots I had the model lie down, but with her head up, on top of a wall. Then I saw that in that position a tighter shot would look good.

Editing

The image was later edited in photoshop, turning it to black and white with some grain, but mostly it was cropped even more centering the image on the face.

In my camera bag

The equipment I use is from Olympus, in sessions like this portrait I usually carry 2 camera bodies, the E-M1X and the E-M1 MarkII. With the M.zuiko 12-40mm 2.8, the 45mm 1.8, the 75mm 1.8 and the 40-150mm 2.8 and a couple of flashes the FL-50 and the FL-900R.

Feedback

Although I am not an expert in portrait photography, the main thing apart from having some idea of how to take the pictures, is to have a good filing between the photographer and the model. If the model is comfortable and the atmosphere is good, the pictures come out by themselves.
