Location
This photo was taken on a recent trip to visit family in Germany. The staircase is on the inside of one of the historic town gates of the largely intact medieval town wall in the small town of Seßlach near Coburg, Germany.Time
Afternoon.Lighting
This image was taken during harsh, early afternoon light that really wasn't great for photography. This specific building was badly back-lit. By cropping in tightly, I was not able to include the iconic arched gate below, but was able to increase exposure time to show all the detail in the weathered wood of the stairs, the hand-hewn sandstones, and flower boxes.Equipment
We drove through town on the way to a butcher shop to buy some special sausage, so all I had with me was a Canon EOS M mirrorless camera with the kit lens, handheld.Inspiration
While the historic buildings and town wall are often photographed, I really liked this little staircase, so I picked this very simple composition.Editing
Due to the difficult light conditions, I would have usually chosen a black and white conversion, but decided to stick with the original color for this, the red and green tones of the flowers really pop on the otherwise boring brown background of sandstone an weathered wood.In my camera bag
I wish I would have brought along my regular camera bag, my Canon EOS 5DS would have been able to capture much more detail. Also, with a longer lens, like a 70-200 mm I would have been able to back up more, to reduce the distortion in the image from tilting the camera upwards.Feedback
There's a lot of history in Germany and much of Europe, so try to not only stick to the big tourist attractions, but travel around as much as you can, also visiting smaller places, you never know what you'll find.
