Behind The Lens

Location

On a Thanksgiving Holiday in 2018 with our son and his family we decided to head south for a short stay on the beach. This picture was taken on an evening beach walk at the Isle of Palms just north of Charleston, South Carolina. Facing south west the sun was setting and it was close to the horizon. Just carrying my Nikon D7500 with an 18/300mm zoom lens I had to shoot this in Landscape mode freehand since I had no tripod with me. Everything was just perfect. I was actually quite surprised when I put it through my Photo editor on my iMac how well it turned out when I processed it.

Time

Obviously we walked the beach at evening sunset and headed southwest towards Charleston. We knew this would be a fairly decent night for this sunset.

Lighting

Without any needed added lighting I just wanted to catch what my eye was seeing.

Equipment

I was carrying my Nikon D7500 with an 18/300mm zoom lens I had to shoot this in Landscape mode freehand since I had no tripod with me. The reason I had no tripod was we forgot to put it in the car when we left home and headed south. I had to improvise and it worked out.

Inspiration

Everything was just perfect. The wind was calm and the sun was setting on the horizon. I loved the way the sun reflected off the wet sand as we walked the beach

Editing

I did post process this shot through my standard iMac Photo editor. Leveled the horizon just a little. Highlighted the color a bit and raised the contrast while bringing the brightness down some.

In my camera bag

I have since upgraded my equipment since I took this shot. I now have a Nikon D500 and a Nikon 200/500mm Zoom for wildlife and action and a newly purchased Nikon Z5 Mirrorless for landscape and portrait. I have a 24/70 F4 Mirrorless lens I carry as well as a Nikon 85mm 1.8, and a Nikon 35mm 1.8 in the bag. I have the FTZ adapter for those last two lenses. I also have a Nikon Z50 Mirrorless with the two kit lenses ( The nifty 50 and the 50/250 mirrorless zoom) for just carry around when I don't want to be hauling a lot of equipment. The Z50 kit lenses are really good lenses and amaze me how sharp they shoot.

Feedback

I usually always have a camera within reach when I am out. I consider a camera as a time machine which can take you back to a moment long gone. There are always shots to be had if you observe the world in total. I do not claim to be a professional at all but if I have learned one thing without that camera I would not have the treasure trove of memories it has brought to my life. Photography is a great hobby. I am now 78 years young and it helps me to meet the new day one sunrise at a time.
