Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Fremont, Michigan

Time

We do these sessions all summer long, 2 Sundays a month, all day! This particular image was taken around 3pm.

Lighting

It is very difficult to light a white horse in the park we use! It was very sunny and very hot but luckily the horse and little girl were quite content while we moved strobes and reflectors around.

Equipment

this image was shot on my Tamron 70-200mm G2. It is my favorite lens and rarely leaves my camera. I used an OCF with an octobox, diffused twice and with a grid to minimize too much light on the horse.

Inspiration

This horse is part of the equine therapy team, Little Horses Big Smiles. They are a herd of 4 mini horses, all therapy trained. The majority of the kids who come out for these sessions have met George (the unicorn) while in the hospital or have seen him on Nat Geo Wild, "The Incredible Dr. Pol". We do these sessions to help them fundraise They are a non-profit organization and all the therapy they provide is free. George truly loves being loved on by all of the kids. Since he is a therapy animal, he is remarkably trained so stand incredibly still, and he is even potty trained!

Editing

Yes! This was a learning process for me but after taking a few classes and studying actual paintings, this came to light.

In my camera bag

Photo equipment? My nifty 50, 24-70, and 70-200 which rarely leaves my camera. Non photo equipment I always carry is candy, bobbypins, safety pins, lotion, and bug spray!

Feedback

Plan! I have learned that if you want the candid shots with kids and animals, you have to plan. In terms of post processing, I have learned that if you want your image to look like something, like an oil painting, then you have to study oil paintings. Tutorials and mentors are great, but original works of art are incredibly valuable.
