This, is what is known as a Rocky Mountain Elk. But intriguingly, though one of his antlers is broken, is referred to as a Royal Elk. A Royal Elk has a 6x6 point rack, each side of his antlers has points on them, they are, more often then not. ...symmetrical. These points are then counted coming to the number 6,
.....So it's easy to deduce the other side once had 6 points. But what is more interesting is why it was broken. Elk during the rut season engage in antler combats ...It involves the 700 pound males, one of the largest land animals on the continent, running at each other with a clash, then wrestling, using those antlers to gain an advantage.
...Sometimes the outcome is rather quick with the challenger recognizing his weakness ....but other times...these elk will really test each other, to the point of exhaustion, getting seriously wounded, or even winding up with the antlers entwined to a degree that they become severely locked ....The elk even die in this position. .....
What makes this elk stand out is his broken antler. It was quite obviously broken in a fight. ....and it shows he is not a quitter ...it shows this one will not back out so easily, this one is a fighter. He will shed his antlers and grow new ones next season...and he will want to fight again... which is important to the species ...if they are to survive....
