Behind The Lens

Location

In Cracow, Poland. It was in Kazimierz district - exactly at cafe "Moment" on one of last days existing of that place. I have asked the manager if I could make the photo, and replace the clocks from place to place on decoration, remove the flowers and posters - and when he agreed for few minutes session I get that clocks from around walls, put in place of other things, just to be many clocks one at the other and more clear , more calm but expressive background than before. The dog was of one of pedestrian's, that I smiled to and asked if his dog would like to be famous, The model is Weronika, the friend of a girl who I was helping to make photo for the diploma (she is a make-up artist) we did several photos for that project.

Time

between 11 and 12 o clock, probably the biggest clock is showing right hour 11:37

Lighting

large dirty window was on left side, and my two friends were helping me with two blends, natural light as I always use. more difficult than light , was to cooperate with mr dog :)

Equipment

russian light meter svierdlovsk 4 , Hasselblad 500 C/M , Carl Zeiss Planar 2.8/80 CF T*, tripod Benro or manfrotto (use both), two blends , I had two 120 type rolls of film: Ilford HP5+ 400 and FP4+ 125 in two cassets ,this shot is on FP4, flatbed scanner if I remember it was scanned on epson V500 ( I also have HP G4050 and had V700) - I wish to scan this frame on Hasselblad or drum scanner in future

Inspiration

Well, I am time fascinated in scientific terms, and have many photos of girls with clocks, it is just one of my hobby - some day my friend who is a book writer and make-up artist was finishing professional make-up school and needed photos for her artwork and her friends diplomas - we made a set of photos in different styles beauty shot, no makeup , close up for diploms, and additional artist shots. We were looking for a place in a town without plan - I spontanously asked the manager of my favorite cafe and he agreed, and because it was last days of existing this place, they had to move to different location, they let me make some rearranging the space and scenery. I love time, I love clocks, I love the moments.

Editing

After developing film in Kodak HC-110 which developer I mostly use (in the past also LC-29), it was just scanned negative - of course it is a little bit cleaned from dust and scratches, levels adjusted, contrast, sharpening - but nothing else. I have negatives as a proof :)

In my camera bag

Usually I take with me just my Hasselblad 500 C/M with Zeiss 80 CF and svierdlovsk4 light meter - nothing else :) I have some stuff, and sometimes use it - but normally just camera with one lens, few rolls of films, few color-correcting filters. What you don't find in my bag is any zoom lens, I hate zooms :) for portraits I almost always use tripod and blends, if I dont have it - I'm making it from styrofoam , paint or a white sheet.

Feedback

Just have a good time when you do photographing, but you need a team if want to do things better, also observe the environment , the sun rays - and try to maximize your oportunities, If you can improve some little details quickly - then do it ! If you will lose too much time, then don't... and don't miss the great light - if it amaze you, then it will not last long. I had just permission and light for 10 minutes session. and only for half of that time light was directed at acceptable angle to dirty window which gave a soft but expressive magic-light, Always search for dirty windows ! it is best for portraits. in fact this photo was made in rush, in less than 2 minutes The dog was borrowed from random pedestrian with kindly permission ( for smile), the place was chosen spontaneously - I had luck, but also helping team of friends holding blends playing with dog etc. It was a team job, and need perfection in communication , I will say it again : almost perfection in communicating of concept and controling situation.. to keep the most magic moments - you need to do as many things as you can in short period of time, you need to know your equipment and team very very well - if you add some experience and some spontanous unpredictable detail, then you invoke the magic.
