Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken while on a weekend trip with my wife and son in Cayucos, CA. It was his first time to the ocean and he was mesmerized by the sand.

Time

This is one of those shots that actually turned out with some nice lighting during mid day around 1 p.m. when the lighting was pretty harsh and coming straight down.

Lighting

It was harsh midday lighting, had to take a few until I got the exposure I thought was good for post processing, not too dark but not too bright.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon 80D and a Canon 70-200mm F/4 lens. It was the middle of the day so there was enough light to take this photo without any tripod, just handheld. I shot it at 70mm and slow the shutter a bit to capture the movement of the sand.

Inspiration

When we first got to the beach, my son was not happy with the feeling of the sand on his feet, but after we showed him it was okay he warmed up to it. This was shot was taken when he finally took a liking to the sand and sat there giggling while watching it slip through his fingers.

Editing

I have a deep love for black and white photography and since only being able to afford Lightroom and not having photoshop I have been playing around with how I want to do black and white photography in Lightroom. For this photo I switch color spectrums to Adobe Black and White, then played a lot with the color toning which is how I got the shades of black, gray and white I wanted. After I dodged and burned until I reached the necessary effect.

In my camera bag

I always have a wide angel and a zoom lens in my bag and depending on the day my Canon 80D or Canon 7D. I always have my Canon 16-35mm F/2.8 and my Canon 70-200mm lenses. I also carry a flash, TTL cable, tripod, GoPro Session, and lately been taking my Ipad with me incase I want to do a quick edit.

Feedback

The best photos of people are going to be captured by having the subject be completely comfortable around you. In this case it was my son(so that wasn't hard to do), so I waited until he was in his own little world and didn't notice me with the camera.
