Behind The Lens

Location

As a result of the COVID restrictions I haven’t been able to get out so I decided to make the best of what I had and this photo was taken inside a light tent on my kitchen table.

Time

I’m not a natural morning person, but I will be up at the crack of dawn if it is necessary. This shot however, was taken in the afternoon, a much more civilised time of day.

Lighting

I wanted this image to make each viewer think “wow, how on earth did you take that?” I wanted to isolate the CD player and the CDs so I used two speed lights in soft boxes on either side of the set (not much room in my kitchen for anything bigger). They were set at half power and each was filtered through a baffle within the soft box, the soft box modifier and then the light tent.

Equipment

My favourite camera body to use is the Canon 5d mkiv and this was coupled with a Sigma 24-70mm 2.8 lens at 48mm, ISO 100, f8, 1/160 mounted on a tripod. The spotlights were Canon triggered remotely.

Inspiration

As a result of the restrictive COVID regulations I was looking for a different way to engage with my passion in isolotion. I bought an e-book complied by Dina Belenko and took immediate inspiration from her work and the advice that she provided. So, after much planning and staging I produced the final image.

Editing

Due to the nature of setting up this photo there was some editing required to remove some of the supporting structures that I used to create the impact (literally for one of the CDs). Colours were boosted and the image as a who,et was generally sharpened.

In my camera bag

I usually have two camera bodies; Canon 5d MKiv and 7d. Lens wise I have a Canon 70-200L 2.8, Canon 50mm 1.8, Sigma 24-70 2.8, Sigma 105 2.8. I have two Canon speed lights with a remote trigger. Never too far away I’d my trusty 5 way fold away reflector and my light tent. There is so much more, but I can only carry so much!

Feedback

To capture a similar image take your time to plan, plan and then plan some more. Time taken to do ‘dry runs’ is time well spent. Be prepared to use every day objects that will support your shot and be able to be edited out post shoot...I use wine corks and cocktail sticks on most shots.
