Location
The photo was taken on the Mendocino Coast of California, just south of Point Arena. The intent of this trip was to photograph Bowling Ball Beach, but having gone up the coast without doing my research, the stone rocks that the beach is named for were under about 6 feet of water due to a rising tide. So, my girlfriend and I instead spent our time walking the beach and bluff areas taking photos.Time
This was late afternoon. if I remember correctly it was around 3:30 or 4.Lighting
The natural lighting along the coast is particularly harsh when looking towards the south. Highlights get blown out and shadows are really dark. When I take photos under these circumstances, I try to shoot with how I'll need to edit the shot in mind.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon 5DSR equipped with a 100-400L lens. It was shot handheld. No other equipment was involved in capturing the image.Inspiration
The want to create something from a weekend trip that didn't go as planned. With my two cameras in tow, I walked the beach looking for images while talking about composition theory with my girlfriend.Editing
This was the first photo I had editted after reading about using Blue Saturation in Lightroom's Calibration tool. I believe that tool helps bring out depth while providing some pop to your image - I'm not sure that I would've been about to separate the highlights where the wave crashes into the sky so sharply without using it.In my camera bag
Canon 5DSR and Mark III, 15mm, 28mm, 35mm, 135mm, 10-24 Tamron, 70-200, and a 100-400 are usually with my in my truck, along with 4 flashes and 3 tripods.Feedback
Take as many photos as you can. With digital memory cards it is better to shoot more than you think you'll need or want. Sometimes a shot will show itself in an image you didn't particularly feel inspired by when you took it.
