Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my room. Now this probably sounds boring but, being in quarantine due to my school's high Covid19 case numbers has really made me take a positive spin on the situation and framing it as a door to great possibilities for more photoshoots with myself!

Time

Well I was listening to music at night and was feeling really inspired to take some portrait shots after recently becoming a member on view bug! Ever since I've gotten on this website I've been really inspired by other artists to get off my artist's block and shoot some really cool pictures!

Lighting

Lighting.... now this is an interesting story. Me totally ignoring the lighting kit I have in my closet, I instead opted for the budget option of a lamp that I have in my room. I put the lamp on the ground at an angle pointed at my face to provide just enough light, it definitely gives the photo a softness to shot with the rim of my glasses casting a nice shadow to contrast.

Equipment

I shot this on a Canon 80d and used a tripod and nothing else.

Inspiration

I was looking to improve taking portraits, and not having access to a model I decided to sub myself in. It was a lot of fun, and definitely improved my skills for the next time I do portraits!

Editing

There wasn't a lot that was special in post editing, but I did convert the original color photo to B&W by first getting rid of the saturation and messing with the brightness settings.

In my camera bag

At most the items I have in my bag are a tripod and two lenses, one is a 50mm and the other is a 18- 135 mm.

Feedback

My biggest piece of advice to others trying to capture something similar is to be aware of the mood of the subject to convey an emotion to the viewer. In this case I am trying to convey some of my different moods while being home. For everyone, life has been in a constant state of readjustment, and it's overwhelming. For me and a lot of others there is a state of tiredness and uncertainty, which I feel my photo encapsulates.
