Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken among the vineyards of Monforte, a medieval village on the slopes of Langhe, a hilly area famous all over the world for the production of Barolo and Barbaresco wines.

Time

It was the month of October 2020, Italy was in full emergency for the Covid pandemic, that Sunday the government had granted a "window" of a few hours to be able to go out and travel outside your municipality of residence. My idea was to go to a little frequented area and walk among the beauty of nature and the manual work of man. The choice fell on Monforte, land of Barolo wine and good food, so I took my equipment and started walking among vineyards. The picture was taken at about 5 pm, it was foggy and at a certain point some rays of sunlight broke the fog and illuminated the leaves of vines, I was in the right place at the right time!

Lighting

Actually there are not many things to say about the lighting, as I wrote before, it had been an outing not previously prepared but dictated by other reasons, so I just followed my instinct and knowledge of the place. A few minutes before it was almost impossible to take pictures because of the fog, the sunlight came out for a few minutes and after the shot, everything became invisible again.

Equipment

I took this picture quickly, looking at the sky I knew that in a few minutes the fog would again envelop everything and it would be impossible to shoot in those conditions. So I gave up the tripod and went into the vineyards with my faithful Sony A7R II camera and Sony 70/200 f4 G lens. I left the aperture open at f/4 to get more blur between the vine leaves and I shot at ISO 200, shutter 1/160, focal length 200mm

Inspiration

For the ones who, just like me, are lucky enough to live near the hills, they know the view of vineyards is something magical, especially at sunset when it turns into a landscape of breathtaking colors. It will also be for this reason that those vineyards have been declared World Heritage by UNESCO. Being in Langhe in autumn is an incredible journey, unprecedented and surprising. When autumn arrives. The colors of the season, in fact, explode in all their warm beauty, completely enveloping the woods, parks and landscapes of the whole territory. This is the perfect time to discover particular places in a slow and unprecedented way, through outdoor walks, trekking and cycling excursions. Sensory and slow adventures that pass through the scent of grape must, chestnuts and precious truffles. And between one walk and another, accompanied by the warm rays of the autumn sun, visions of incredible beauty appear before our eyes: uncontaminated and extraordinary landscapes that belong to this land. This is what inspired me to take this (and other) photographs.

Editing

Post-processing? Those who follow me know, I am not a big fan of this practice, I come from the magical world of film, so apart from a few small tricks in the darkroom, there were no great possibilities to post-process the images. You learned to take pictures just imagining the result, you could not know what you had done except in your mind so, I applied this rule when I switched to digital. I do make some corrections, maybe on contrast or highlights but little more. In this specific case I didn't need to do almost anything, nature, light and landscape made the difference, they were the "preset" for this photograph!

In my camera bag

My equipment ... don't you have a backup question? :) I always carry too many things in my backpack ... after carrying around Canon SLRs for years, now that I'm getting older I switched to Sony mirrolexes, I've been using them for just over two years and between us the true love has sparked! But I have not betrayed Canon completely, in fact the two systems live together and what unites them is the Sigma MC-11 adapter, a fantastic accessory that allows me to use my Canon lenses on Sony bodies. Obviously I also use several Sony Zeiss lenses and G series but all these lenses have a weight :( My must-have lenses to carry with me (not all at once, eh!!) are: 85mm - 35mm - 20mm - 12/24 - 16/35 - 24/105mm and 70/200mm and then others specific to particular cases such as architecture or landscapes or macro.

Feedback

If someone asked me for advice on taking a photo like this, I would tell them to pay attention to lighting control, especially since in this case there was a very diffuse light because of the fog. Obviously in this photo the role of nature was decisive, the sun, the fog and the color of the leaves that brightened the whole image, channeling the attention of the viewer and directing the eye towards the farmhouse at the bottom, almost lost in the fog. The other winning factor that applies to any photograph is simplicity and "cleanliness", meaning that the best photos, the ones that make you say WOW or that are awarded, are those in which the photographer has eliminated as many disturbing elements as possible. Unfortunately I see that many photographers tend to add, add and add again ... and then maybe spend the night on PS or LR to remove, remove, remove :-D
