Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Rock Island Swing Bridge Park in southern Minnesota. The old swing bridge extends over the Mississippi river giving unique views of the river.

Time

A friend and I had planned to spend the Sunday afternoon out taking photos hoping to catch some fall color. It was just at the beginning of the colors in our area. Despite it being an unusually cool and cloudy day we headed out mid Sunday afternoon. It was too early in the season for a lot of color so I decided to focus on the bridge.

Lighting

Sometimes I enjoy shooting on cloudy days. The diffused light and lack of shadows make for some interesting photos. It gives a more eerie feeling to this photo that complements the aging bridge.

Equipment

Olympus OMD M1 Mark II mZuiko 25mm f1.2 prime handheld

Inspiration

I am rather new to photography. Every time I go out to shoot is a lesson. I love playing with perspective. I am also drawn to texture and detail. I really liked the geometric nature of the bridge and the texture created by the aging metal.

Editing

I used Raw Therapee to fix the highlights and shadows. I also leveled the photo. I found it interesting that there was no true level on the bridge. Leveling one line would skew another. I like the skew of the lines.

In my camera bag

My husband and I share lenses and we have acquired quite a few but my favorites are the mZuiko 45mm 1.2, 25mm 1.2 and the 60mm 2.8macro. I usually carry the macro lens and either the 25mm or 45mm.

Feedback

You don't have to have a plan when you go out to shoot. Stay open minded. Any situation can make a good photograph. For beginners like me, just keep trying new things.
