Location
I took this photo on a lovely rocky beach in Squamish BC, Canada.Time
This was a little trip I did with some good friends of mine up along the coast of BC. We took the morning drive out to our location and camped along the road with the beach just on the other side. We arrived early afternoon and took some time to scope out the surroundings and find a good spot for our photo shoot. This was late August and the the sun was up high and shining super bright which was perfect for us. Having the water close by was fantastic as throughout the day we got quite hot and having a chance to cool whenever we needed to was ideal.Lighting
Our objective was to create a harsh lighting which is why we went midday in an open area to capture as much sunlight as we could. After getting some lifestyle shots we got inspired to do a more editorial style image so we needed to frame the clothing items with a little extra something. Looking around our location there was some lovely plantation that was going to fabulous for the job. I purposely shot from a sharp high angle standing in front of some shrubbery to get a clean shadow from the sunlight, creating a unique look for the capture.Equipment
I shot with a Canon 6D Mark ii for the body and switched between the Canon 50mm L 1.2 and the Canon 100mm L IS. Our shoot was pretty straight forward as we were using natural light as our main source but you can use a flash to help simulate harsh lighting if your sun starts going down and you still need those few last shots.Inspiration
The photo was part of a session I did for a local brand, they were releasing a new summer collection. My intention for this particular capture was to capture a feeling, and create a unique editorial take similar to what you see in fashion magazines. The thing that was at the forefront in my mind was a California Dreaming vibe. Having that resemblance of a hot summer day, with the sun shining down and enjoying the sand under your feet. In truth, the thing that really helps captures those kind of moments are when you are with those that you treasure in your life.Editing
For my shoots I always shoot in RAW to get the most detail that I can for printing and for post production. For this piece I focused on flattening the colours highlights to create a "RETRO" look to the styling. This works really well with a bright colour pallets, so I played around with most of the colours individually to find a good balance in tonality. In my camera bag
My go to pack is always filled with my most versatile equipment for my shoots, keeping in mind that I want to be prepared for different setups and styles. The all time golden start for me is the 50mm Prime lens , the closest one to one lens that allows you to be mobile and come out on top of any challenges that rise in your sessions. For travelling or constant relocation I always take my BLACKRAPID cross sling strap to secure my body. This piece is perfect if you are shooting with one or two cameras and puts less stress on worrying about dropping your camera and keeps the comfort level much higher. For places where I might need some extra light I typically have on hand one or more Speedlights, this helps a lot for most Canon cameras as they are weaker in lowlight conditions. And lastly, my kit will change depending on what I am photographing, containing lenses and tripods for the appropriate occasion.Feedback
No matter what your objective is for the day or the session, a huge benefactor in creating that perfect shot is having a vision of what you are wanting to capture. This will include mood boards on Pinterest, planning out styling ahead of time, setting the tone for your image and being ready to change your lens or position if you get stuck. For this Image specifically I recommend to use props or natural framing to create shadows and detail. And lastly, shooting in high sunlight situation a 4 in 1 reflector is everyone's best friend, allowing you to modify your lighting on your subject.
