Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Mangalajodi wetland situated in the Tangi block of Orissa state in India.

Time

This is one of my favourite images. I woke up early in the winter morning and through the chilly winter breeze, we started boating in a small boat through the vast wetland of Mangalajodi with my guide friend & boatman. But till about 9.00 am we didn't find any significant moment of migratory bird's activity. Then came the break. We spotted this Black-Headed Ibish keen on finding a catch.

Lighting

Light is always one of the key parts of any photograph. The fairly angular morning light coming through the fine layers of fog was a perfect one. I instructed my boatman to row to a vantage point where I can take most of the advantage of the angular morning light. Because without a good direct light we cannot bring out the full detail of the Black Head of that bird.

Equipment

This shot was taken handheld from a small sleek boat, with Nikon D7100 with 70~300 AF-P Lens.

Inspiration

I am always fascinated with Nature & its creatures. One of my favourites is Bird's mood & action photography. It's really amazing to watch this Ibish catching venomous snakes and managing them. They just eat those snakes like noodles.

Editing

In nature photography, I really avoid doing any heavy post-processing. Also according to PSA & FIAP guideline, nature photography should have minimal and basic post-processing only. I support & respect that guideline. In this image I have done, cropping, highlight adjustment, Noise reduction and black correction only.

In my camera bag

Well, what's in the bag? it's a question I am often faced with. While on a birding trip nowadays I used to carry my Nikon D7100, Nikor 200-500 f/5.6, two batteries, 4 memory card and cleaning tissues/cloths.

Feedback

Patience!!! Respect!!! Yes, patience is the key factor to get a good moment of your subject. Sometimes I need to and have to wait for more than 30-40 mins, even an hour or so to get a good moment from my subject. And Respect. you need to respect the privacy of your subject. we should never disturb our subject to get a good action shot or moment. Mother Nature gave us everything and we should try to learn the ways of not only peaceful but respectful co-existence with other species on this beautiful earth which we call our Home.
